¿AZOTEAS VERDES?

¿Por qué tener una azotea verde? ¿Y por qué no? En las ciudades tan edificadas y áreas urbanas en general, necesitamos en definitiva más áreas verdes; y como nos han dejado ya sin espacio en el suelo ¿Por qué no en la azotea? Las azoteas verdes son precisamente una estrategia para recuperar las áreas verdes y aportar aunque sea un poco en la mejora de la calidad de aire (que en ésta época la necesitamos mucho, sobre todo en la CDMX y con todo esto de la contingencia ya deberíamos de estar poniendo plantas por todas las azoteas).

Con estos jardines en las alturas, se crean espacios ecológicos que además de aportar un poco de estética a las ciudades, generan beneficios económicos y ambientales ¿Cómo cuáles? Por ejemplo:

JARDINES VERTICALES

¿Alguna vez han ido a un restaurante, bar o simplemente caminando por la calle y ven muchas plantas pegadas en la pared? Un día caminando por la calle me encontré con un montón de plantitas en la pared de un edificio y me pregunté ¿Qué onda con esto? ¿Qué es? ¿Para qué sirve? ¡Se ve súper cool!

Bueno pues resulta que a estas plantitas pegadas en la pared se les llama Jardines Verticales o también son conocidos como Muros Verdes y sirven para bastantes cosas, son muros con plantas de forma que pueden crecer en diferentes medios de cultivos, y se alimentan por medio de agua que se encuentra entre las láminas que las sostienen en las paredes. Estas paredes son muy útiles en zonas áridas pero sobre todo en las ciudades.

Pero ¿En qué ayuda este jardincito vertical? Pues resulta que para bastantes cosas, cosas que seguro ni te imaginabas por ejemplo:

  • Ayuda en la reducción de sistemas impermeabilizantes.
  • Disminuye el gasto energético en aires acondicionados.
  • Incrementa el valor del inmueble.
  • Captación de CO2 y partículas suspendidas para limpieza del aire y lluvia.
  • Generación de Oxígeno.
  • Retención de agua

No voy a mentir, hasta hace unas cuantas semanas era de las personas menos ecológicas que alguien pudiera conocer, mis baños duraban más de 20 minutos, gastaba papel como si no hubiera un mañana, me gustaba imprimir todo (porque según yo, así “aprendía” mejor), fumaba en mi carro y aventaba la colilla por la ventana, no reciclaba nada; ni siquiera una botella de agua, no separaba la basura, dejaba las luces prendidas y mis aparatos eléctricos estaban conectados siempre. Podría llenar más de una hoja con acciones cero ecológicas, hasta hace unas semanas era una burbuja emisora de contaminantes, cualquier lugar que pisara dejaba inevitablemente mi huella de carbono.

¿Por qué hacía esto? Por ignorante y por egoísta. No estaba consciente de lo que mis acciones producían en el medio ambiente y en el planeta. Pensaba… ¿Qué más da? ¿Qué impacto puedo dejar yo? ¡Solo soy una persona!

Creo que hay muchas personas que piensan como pensaba yo. Y que desde hace mucho tiempo la sociedad ha vivido bajo ésta línea de pensamiento ¿Qué impacto podría dejar yo? Pero creo que ya ha pasado tanto tiempo y han sido tantas las personas ignorantes y egoístas, que ha llegado el punto en que nos estamos acabando el planeta.

Al principio iniciamos este blog con contenidos sólo en inglés, porque queríamos que muchas personas nos leyeran (obvio, como todos los blogueros) e incrédulas nosotras (o bueno al menos yo) estaba 100% convencida que si poníamos contenidos en español nadie nos iba a leer o no íbamos a tener el alcance que nosotras esperábamos, porque “según yo” no hay tantas personas interesadas por el medio ambiente en los países de habla hispana y mucho menos en México. Sí, sí táchenme de malinchista, pero esa era la verdad que yo creía. Que ignorante e inconsciente era hasta hace unas semanas.

Biobox in Mexico City

Hensgsheng Plastic MX a company dedicated to recycling and processing plastic products started a campaign in Mexico City that consists of installing Biorecyclable machines created by Mexicans. The first stage of this program started in the Cuahutemoc delegation in 2014 and currently you can find them in the following locations:

  • Parque México
  • Avenida Álvaro Obregón
  • Plaza Luis Cabrera
  • Glorieta de la Cibeles
  • Glorieta de Insurgentes
  • Explanada de la delegación Cuauhtémoc

These machines work with a program that helps people subsidize in their day-to-day life. In what way will they help and motivate people to recycle? First they were implemented to help in the following way:

  • Public transportation
  • Promotions and discounts in department stores
  • Tickets to the movies, ice cream, etc.
  • Cellphone bill
  • Free Wi-Fi in some places

The more you recycle the more recycle points you will get! So this is a great way to motivate people and help create an environmental culture in Mexico City. At the moment I don’t know how many points you get by recycling a single plastic bottle but I’m looking forward in finding out more about these amazing machines.

These machines were also installed at La Feria de Chapultepec, an adventure park in Mexico City, at the beginning of last year. This is one of the many strategies that complete the model of business, social work and growth of this theme park.

The installment of the Biorecyclable Machines at “La Feria” (as it’s known by the locals) will allow the recycled material stored in them to transform into a donation to the trust fund “Pro Bosque de Chapultepec” (in favor of the Chapultepec forest). This trust fund is mainly focused on the preservation of the last standing forest in Mexico City; so that in a near future it will become a sustainable theme park and so it will create a positive impact in the ecological conservation of the city.

If you enter recyclable materials in any of the machines located at La Feria the money that you would generally get in different discounts and promotions would go to the trust fund previously mentioned. So currently you have two options to contribute by using these machines.

The machines work in the following way: they separate the recyclable residues by storing them in different compartments by the material they are made of because these machines are programmed in a specific way that allow them to differentiate the many materials of the various residues deposited in them. Then they compress these residues up to 92% less of their original size so that they can be stored in the right place. For the moment, these machines are only accepting PET and aluminum materials.

Personally I haven’t used these machines but I’m very curios and exited at the same time because this is a big step regarding environmental issues in Mexico City. I really do hope one day these machines will be accessible to everyone in many places.

Bahidorá

Bahidorá took place on February 20th, 2016 in Las Estacas, Morelos, Mexico. This festival is mainly for having fun with your friends for a weekend and enjoying good music. In this festival you have the option to camp but I wouldn’t recommend it if you are not a big fan of the heat because at Las Estacas the sun is very intense and your tent becomes an oven at 9am.

Nonetheless I’m not here to judge about the music nor the food they sell nor the camping conditions. I’m writing this blog entry to celebrate the fact that Bahidorá took the time to improve their impact on the planet. I’m a smoker and so are most of my friends so naturally we brought cigarettes to the concert and just as I was about to light my first cigarette I guy came towards me and gave me a little orange plastic sort of box. (Here is the picture because apparently I’m not very good at describing objects).

 

 

This little orange thing is made to store the ashes and the residue of your cigarettes so that you can reduce your carbon footprint and not damage the soil with the hundreds of chemicals that a cigarette contains. This is actually a great idea because smokers will be able to enjoy the pleasure of a cigarette with a clear conscience about damaging our planet. Personally I think it’s a great idea to make a portable ashtray because it is so simple yet no one has one or makes one. I have never seen a store where they sell these and I think it’s a great idea, it really is.

So congratulations to Bahidorá, the first sustainable music festival I’ve attended which I broadly recommend.

Your carbon footprint

What is your carbon footprint? It’s the effect that you (or your family, organization or business) have on the climate in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases you produce (usually measured in units of carbon dioxide).

It´s very important to know what your carbon footprint is because if you want to help with the global warming crisis you have to know how your lifestyle is contributing to the acceleration of climate change. Once you know this information, you could say that your number one step to helping our planet is complete.

There are many ways in which you leave carbon emission on a daily basis mostly when using energy that comes from non-renewable resources such as coal, oil and natural gas. You regularly generate carbon emissions when heating or cooling your home and office, when you turn on lights, when you use any electrical appliances, when you drive, among others. You also generate carbon emissions indirectly when purchasing food, clothing, cosmetics and household products. Carbon dioxide is generated with the production of most manufactured goods but it becomes greater when the product is transported long distances. Deforestation is an important factor contributing to the increase of levels of carbon dioxide because trees help to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. It is important to know which foods and paper products contribute in a negative way to climate change in our planet.

Personally this helped me create conscience about the environment when I did my carbon emission test, I found out I was actually causing a lot of damage to our planet by not recycling paper products and plastic. Form now on I tend to use sheets of paper on both sides when writing and printing.

How to get a sustainable development?

1.- Revitalize growth, keep it active. Increase the growth in countries in development.

2.- Change the quality of our development to a better distribution of incomes and to reduce the vulnerability to an economic crisis.

3.-Satisfy the essential human needs. They must hace a job, energy (wood), Home, water, medical attention, structure, etc.

4.-Insurance for a certain population for future growth.

A Sustainable future

The future of our planet is currently on a sustainable development. But what is a sustainable development? A sustainable development, satisfies our needs in the present without meaning a commitment to future generations and their capacity to satisfy theirs.

DSCN4216Anything that’s sustainable has its own conscious, it takes into consideration developed countries and countries in development. It understands that anything that happen in any place around the world affects the rest and that there are real consequences.

The sustainable development is the proposal of a progressive transformation of economy and society as it takes into consideration the effects this could have in politics and different businesses because of the restriction of resources. Its main target is to satisfy human needs and ideas leading to a physic sustainability that is worried about social equality among generations.

For obvious reasons, countries that are still in development have a bigger change of fronting an ecological crisis. The sustainable growing happens at the same time of the economic growing, a larger number of people, more resources are needed and we have to take into consideration that the technology we have today also has a repercussion besides helping. The economic growth and development also have an impact in ecosystems.

For the effects of sustainability to be noticeable and not only the overuse of resources, it’s necessary to plan strategies, work in team, crear laws and make a fair distribution of the resources that are not being overused, because when any system approaches ecologic limits, differences have bigger impacts in people with a lack of resources.

 

 

What is Global Warming?

 

 

The definition of Global Warming is the increase of the average temperature of the surface of the earth. The increase of the temperature is what attributes to the “Greenhouse Effect” in simple words; this means that the heat of the sun gets caught in our atmosphere.

Scientific evidence relates a variety of human activities of the Industrial Era to the rapid acceleration of the Greenhouse Effect in our atmosphere. Since 1980 there has been a constant decrease of 4% per decade of the Ozone layer, this layer is very important to any type of life on earth because it protects us from the UV radiation of the sun, which is incredibly bad for any of us. The deterioration of the Ozone layer is directly linked to the augmentation of skin cancer, cataracts, failure in the immune system, crop damage and the probable extinction of plankton. In 1973 scientists found that the problem with the destruction of the Ozone layer came from the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which where utilized on aerosol sprays and as a cooling system in air conditioners and refrigerators.

The previous paragraphs may seem as overwhelming information that you may consider as non-important or maybe even boring but it is tremendously essential to understand where this problem is coming from in order to start helping. Global Warming is not a chronic disease that our planet is going through, this disease has a cure and it starts with you.
